Sikela in the Agora
On the eve of the Sicilian campaign, we participate in a fictional story starring a woman of the time, Sikela. Sikela has a shop in the market (Agora) and sells herbs and perfumes for a living. However, she is not a citizen of Athens, but a foreigner. As her name suggests, she comes from Sicily.
During the educational program, young students follow Sikela to the Agora and discover sherds with ancient graffiti. They solve puzzles, participate in hypothetical scenarios, and understand everyday life in ancient Athens during the Peace of Nicias and the operation of the Ancient Agora. They seek answers to questions about the functions of democracy and "talk" with a foreign woman who lived in her way the events of the time. In addition, they understand the importance of ancient graphs, learn about the conservation of monuments today, the natural and man-made dangers that threaten them, and the negative effects of modern graffiti.
The program folder includes various experiential activities and worksheets for activities in the archaeological sites and the class, a guide to the Museum of the Agora, a timeline of the 5th century BC, links to the school curriculum, preparation material, bibliography and useful links.
The program aims to raise awareness and develop students' creative and critical thinking on issues of cultural heritage protection.
