In the neighborhoods of Koili and Meliti...a strange day of 335 BC
October 335 BC Alexander has already destroyed Thebes and is preparing to attack Athens. The city is in turmoil, the Ekklesia of Demos is called to make decisions!
How will the Athenians react to Alexander's threats? Why should an Athenian deal with the affairs of the city? What is the role of women in these crucial decisions? Can graffiti affect developments?
The students walk to the remains of the municipalities west of the Acropolis and end up at the Pnyx. Following an Athenian family for a day and using extracts from ancient sources, they visit an ancient house, the ancient neighborhoods of Koili and Meliti, get to know aspects of the daily life of the ancient people and decide whether the protagonist will deal with the issues of the city or look at his family affairs only. In Pnyx, they revive a historic meeting of October 335 BC and perceive the place where democracy, a very important chapter of world cultural heritage, was first implemented.
The program file includes various activities and worksheets for activities in the archaeological site and the class, a timeline of the 4th century BC, links to the school curriculum, preparation material, bibliography, and useful links.
The aim of the educational program is to promote the historical, global and timeless value of the Western Hills and especially of the Pnyx, as it was there that the foundations of democracy and the principles that govern it were laid.
